Sweet Adelines International

Background Information

Sweet Adelines International is a nonprofit music education organization dedicated to promoting the art of barbershop singing for women. Established in 1945 by Edna Mae Anderson in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the organization aims to teach and train members in music, creating and promoting barbershop quartets and other musical groups.

History

The organization began when Anderson gathered a group of women interested in participating in the same type of harmony as their husbands, who were part of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America (now known as the Barbershop Harmony Society). The first chapter was formed by the end of 1945. Sweet Adelines went international in 1953 with the chartering of its first chapter outside the U.S. in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. The name officially changed to Sweet Adelines International in 1991, reflecting its global reach.

Membership and Activities

Sweet Adelines International has a diverse membership of nearly 23,000 women across the globe, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and several European countries. The organization supports over 1,200 registered quartets and 600 choruses. It provides opportunities for its members to develop their musical skills through education and performances.

Competitions and Records

The organization holds an annual international singing competition, which began in 1947 for quartets and expanded to include choruses in 1973. In 2009, Sweet Adelines set the Guinness World Record for the Largest Singing Lesson, involving 6,651 singers.

Educational and Charitable Activities

Sweet Adelines International is recognized as a 501(c)(3) exempt educational organization. It focuses on educating members in singing four-part harmony, barbershop style, and promoting appreciation for this art form. The organization also supports charitable causes by making donations to other qualified nonprofit organizations.

Mission and Impact

The mission of Sweet Adelines International is encapsulated in its motto, "Harmonize the World," reflecting its commitment to spread harmony and musical education globally. Its members engage in various community performances and fundraising events, furthering the organization's goals and contributing to social causes.
