Description

South Jersey Land & Water Trust Inc.

The South Jersey Land & Water Trust Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the land and water resources of southern New Jersey. Founded in 2006 through the merger of two established organizations—the South Jersey Land Trust and the Federation of Gloucester County Watersheds—the Trust combines efforts to enhance environmental conservation and community engagement in the region.

History

The South Jersey Land Trust was originally established in 1991 by a group of concerned citizens focused on grassroots land preservation. As an all-volunteer organization, it successfully preserved over 1,400 acres of land, collaborating with government agencies and utilizing grants from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) for projects in the Raccoon and Oldmans Creek watersheds.

The Federation of Gloucester County Watersheds was founded in 1993 as an umbrella organization supporting eight watershed associations within Gloucester County. It emphasized education, outreach, and advocacy on water and watershed issues, hosting events like "WaterFest" in 1997. The Federation also worked on land preservation, notably acquiring the Lodge property alongside the Mantua Creek.

In 2006, the two organizations merged to form the South Jersey Land & Water Trust. Since then, the Trust has expanded its scope, acquiring properties such as the Oldmans Creek Preserve in Auburn, New Jersey, in 2009.

Mission and Activities

The Trust's mission is to preserve, protect, and enhance the natural, cultural, and historic heritage of southern New Jersey for future generations. It implements various programs aimed at land preservation, environmental education, and community engagement. These include:

  • Land Preservation: Protecting and acquiring lands to safeguard natural and historical resources.
  • Environmental Education: Conducting workshops, stream assessments, and habitat restoration projects.
  • Community Involvement: Organizing monthly walks, community cleanups, and educational events to foster public participation in conservation efforts.

Impact and Recognition

The South Jersey Land & Water Trust is recognized as an accredited member of the Land Trust Alliance. As of the latest data, the Trust has ownership of 112 acres, oversees 186 acres under easement, and has acquired and reconveyed 802 acres. Additionally, it protects another 325 acres through other conservation means.

The organization's efforts contribute significantly to maintaining the environmental integrity and natural beauty of southern New Jersey, ensuring these resources remain accessible for community enjoyment and education.
