Happy Birthday Harold Edgerton! Born on this day in 1903. Harold "Doc" Edgerton was a scientist who used photography to expand the capabilities of the human eye to microsecond vision. His pioneering research in stroboscopic photography laid the foundation for the development of the modern electronic flash. Edgerton developed the stroboscope in 1933 as a young instructor in electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The device established him not only as one of the leading inventors of the twentieth century but also as a giant in the history of photography. Edgerton was the first person to take high-speed color photographs and to record the split seconds of atomic explosions. He first used the startling image of a bullet and an apple to illustrate a lecture titled “How to Make Applesauce at MIT.” Almost immediately after the .30 caliber bullet penetrated it, the apple disintegrated. Surprisingly, the entry of the speeding bullet is as visually explosive as the exit. Fun fact, the first image also served as the inspiration for the BulletBoys debut album released in 1988. Any hair metal band fans here? . . . .
