Wally Byam Caravan Club International Inc.

The Wally Byam Caravan Club International Inc. (WBCCI), now known as the Airstream Club International, is a nonprofit organization founded on August 3, 1955. It was named in honor of Wallace Merle "Wally" Byam, who was a pioneer in the manufacture of travel trailers and the founder of Airstream Inc. The club's purpose is to foster fun, fellowship, and adventure among its members while encouraging the use of Airstream travel trailers for exploring the world.

History

The concept of group RV travel was initiated by Wally Byam in 1951 with a caravan to Central America. This event was highly successful, and subsequent caravans were conducted to Mexico and Eastern Canada. The club was formally established during the Eastern Canada Caravan in 1955 in Kentville, Nova Scotia.

Structure and Activities

WBCCI is structured into local Units, Regions, and a national organization. Local Units began to form shortly after the club's inception in 1955, and by the mid-1970s, over 170 Units were established across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. In the 1960s, 12 geographic Regions were created to better manage the growing membership. These organizational layers facilitate the planning of caravans and rallies, which are fundamental to the club's activities.

Caravans and Rallies

• Caravans: These are extended trips, often lasting several days or weeks, during which members travel together from one location to another. Wally Byam led caravans worldwide, including historic trips like the 1959 Cape Town to Nairobi journey. Today, the club conducts around 20 "numbered" (official) caravans annually, as well as numerous regional and local caravans.

• Rallies: Unlike caravans, rallies are shorter events, often held over a weekend. They offer an opportunity for members to gather at a single location, participate in activities, and strengthen club bonds.

Mission and Impact

The WBCCI Foundation, another component related to the club, focuses on preserving and promoting an outdoors-oriented lifestyle. It supports initiatives that protect natural environments enjoyed by Airstream owners and partners with organizations to educate on best practices for outdoor activities.

Wally Byam's legacy continues to inspire travel enthusiasts worldwide through the club's activities. His vision of adventure and exploration is sustained by the club's ongoing efforts to promote friendship and camaraderie among Airstream owners.
