🐢 It was a bittersweet day for our Pike 9 students! After nine months of caring for baby wood turtles, it was time to say goodbye as they were released into their natural habitat. Thanks to our partnership with Zoo New England, students had the rare opportunity to support local conservation efforts hands-on. Under a special permit, they helped raise and prepare their two turtles, Gurt and Angus, complete with wellness checks and PIT trackers. Now, Angus (the larger of the two) even has a radio tracking device to monitor his journey in the wild! A special thank you to the Andover Youth Center for lending us canoes and kayaks to help make release day possible, and another big thank you to Zoo New England for their guidance, expertise, and continued collaboration throughout this entire project. 🐢 What’s next? Conservation efforts continue! Tonight, Pike 9 students will join a Zoom meeting with the Andover Conservation Commission to learn if the RDA (Request for Determination of Applicability) they filed will be accepted, allowing Pike to manage and renovate the school’s nature trail over the next three years under the Wetlands Protection Act.
