PALMERSTON FORTS SOCIETY
The Palmerston Forts Society was formed in 1984 and brings together enthusiasts who have an active interest in nineteenth century military fortifications and associated artillery worldwide, but particularly within Hampshire. The Palmerston Forts Society acts as a forum for research on the Victorian Fortifications of the Portsmouth area and the U.K. A journal is published each year. The Society arranges work parties and educational programmes of lectures, talks and visits to forts. A section of the Society is the Portsdown Artillery Volunteers who regularly perform authentic Victorian gun drills and firings.

Had an enemy been positioned on the hill then Portsmouth harbour and dockyard would have been vulnerable to artillery fire.
