Natural History students finished off the final 500 feet of fence top for trials this season with various anti-perching treatments around the CA Least Tern Nesting Preserve on Huntington State Beach. In addition to pinwheels, more than half of the fence top sports crisscrossed annoyance lines perched above the cantilevered arms and mesh that keep Coyotes from scaling the chain link. Yesterday’s installations were of sun catchers, reflectors, and streamers of duct tape with reflective backing. We are also trying out wood chick shelters against the fences where the young tend to congregate anyway. Nesting season for endangered CA Least Terns is upon us, the first dozen having been spotted over the Preserve on April 15th. Here’s hoping for a successful season despite domoic acid levels that have now claimed a couple of whales locally, illegal fireworks, and hungry local raptors. A Peregrine or two may still land on the nesting Preserve fence but not without newly installed distractions! (fb)
