In Remembrance of Anna Frazier Many Diné grassroots and environmental advocates are mourning the passing and loss of Anna Frazier, an early pillar of Indigenous environmental justice. Anna was a co-founding member of Diné C.A.R.E. In the late 1980s, she took action to defend her home community of Dilkon from a proposal to establish a toxic waste incinerator there. The campaign was successful, and after that win Anna went on to join other Diné social and environmental justice organizers across Diné Bikéyah in preventing other polluting and toxic threats to our communities. Collectively they formed Diné C.A.R.E. Their organizing and advocacy safeguarded our beloved land, water, air, and people from exploitative resource extraction projects that would have caused permanent damage. As a fluent speaker of our language, Anna was able to organize and translate the specifics of various threatening environmental projects and the harm they would cause to everyday community members. Elders often expressed appreciation for her support and encouragement that enabled them to speak up for themselves. For many years, Anna was the main and at times only organizer for what was then our small grassroots organization. As such, she traveled to just about every chapter across the Navajo Nation. She deepened her knowledge and shared information about the many threats posed by resource extraction proposals involving coal, oil and gas, uranium, and many others. Anna was known by many community members and grassroots advocates for her diplomacy, care, and devotion. Diné and non-Diné felt at ease talking with her and enjoyed her insights, presence and contributions. Anna paved the way for many Diné organizers and environmental justice advocates. We are grateful for her example as we honor her years of commitment to preserving our Diné way of life, ancestral teachings, and protection of our homeland for future generations. We will carry on her legacy through our continued protection of Diné Bikéyah. In fond remembrance and deepest gratitude, Robyn Jackson Executive Director Diné C.A.R.E.
