Our goal is to equip Pre-K to 1st Grade students with foundational reading skills through an arts-based program grounded in the science of reading. Reading In Motion’s mission is to get every student reading at grade level or above during their early years, especially students who need greater support due to their circumstances. Our values are rooted in the belief that early literacy skills are the most powerful tools we can provide a student for a successful life, and we use the arts to improve learning and highlight the importance of creativity, joy, practice, and discipline. We accomplish our organizational mission through an arts-infused proprietary curriculum that has consistently proven to significantly improve literacy performance outcomes among PreK–3rd grade students. We work alongside educators and parents/caregivers to implement our curriculum through a variety of in and out-of-school programs.

Reading In Motion
Introduction

Reading In Motion is a U.S. nonprofit organization focused on improving literacy among early elementary students, particularly those from under-resourced communities. Founded in 1983, it is based in Chicago, Illinois, and has expanded its services to other regions including Clark County, Nevada, Utah, and Wisconsin.

History

Reading In Motion began by providing arts-based education, incorporating music, drama, and dance, to children in Chicago Public Schools. Over time, it shifted its focus towards literacy when instructors noticed significant reading challenges among their students. By the mid-1990s, literacy had become the primary focus, leading to the development of a core-wraparound curriculum and instructional coaching for teachers. This curriculum is designed to measurably improve students’ reading skills, especially in PreK to 3rd grade levels.

Programs and Services

The organization offers an innovative literacy model that uses music, drama, and other engaging elements to enhance student learning experiences. Reading In Motion trains classroom teachers to deliver this curriculum daily, providing them with coaching, educational materials, and data to tailor instruction to individual student needs. The curriculum is available in both English and Spanish, reflecting the diverse linguistic backgrounds of its students.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Reading In Motion adapted its model to include virtual coaching and support, enabling teachers to continue delivering the program remotely.

Impact and Expansion

Since its inception, Reading In Motion has served over 100,000 students. It has consistently demonstrated significant improvements in early literacy skills among its participants compared to their peers without the program. The nonprofit aims to continue expanding into new regions, enhancing its professional development offerings for educators, and engaging communities in early childhood literacy initiatives.

Financial Overview

As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, Reading In Motion relies primarily on contributions and program services for its revenue. The organization's budget is generally between $1 million and $5 million, with the majority of its revenue coming from donations. Expenses include executive compensation and program costs to support its educational initiatives.

Awards and Recognition

While specific awards are not detailed in available information, Reading In Motion's commitment to innovative literacy programs has earned it recognition within educational circles. Its unique approach combining arts with literacy has been noted for its effectiveness in engaging students and improving their reading abilities.
