Riviera Theatre & Organ Preservation Society Inc
The Riviera Theatre & Organ Preservation Society Inc is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, maintenance, and operation of the historic Riviera Theatre and its renowned Mighty Wurlitzer theatre organ. Founded to protect this cultural landmark, the society ensures the theatre remains a vibrant part of the community, offering a diverse range of live performances and events.
Mission
The organization's mission is to restore, maintain, and utilize the Riviera Theatre as a premier regional destination for live music, performing arts, and educational programs. It emphasizes the preservation of the theatre as a historic landmark, especially its famous Mighty Wurlitzer organ, which is one of the most well-maintained and frequently performing theatre organs in the nation[1][2].
History
The Riviera Theatre, often referred to as the "Showplace of the Tonawandas," was originally built in 1926 by the Yellen Family. Designed by Leon H. Lempart and Son in the Italian Renaissance style, the theatre quickly became a popular venue for movies and vaudeville performances. The Mighty Wurlitzer organ, installed in the theatre, was used to accompany silent films and has been utilized by numerous famous artists over the years. After falling into disuse during the Great Depression and the transition to sound films, the organ was refurbished in the 1940s. The theatre changed hands several times before being purchased by the Niagara Frontier Theater Organ Society (now known as the Riviera Theatre and Organ Preservation Society, Inc.), which has operated it since 1988[1][2].
Programs and Activities
The society hosts over 175 events annually, attracting about 100,000 visitors. These events include live concerts, theatre productions, dance performances, and movies. The organization relies on a dedicated team of volunteers and community support to maintain the theatre and its organ. Donations to the society are tax-deductible, contributing to the ongoing restoration and preservation of the theatre[3][4].
Preservation Efforts
The Riviera Theatre was listed on the National and New York State Registers of Historic Places in 1980. The society's preservation efforts have transformed the theatre from a potential demolition site into a thriving cultural center. The Mighty Wurlitzer organ underwent significant restoration in 2008, enhancing its sound for modern performances[2][3].
Community Engagement
The society fosters community involvement through events and fundraising initiatives. For example, a "Buy-a-Brick" campaign supports the theatre's programs and ongoing renovations[5].
