“The climate crisis is not ‘gender neutral’. Women and girls bear the brunt of its impacts, which amplify existing gender inequalities and pose unique threats to their livelihoods, health and safety.” The United Nations has released a new report showcasing the staggering connection between gender-based violence and the climate crisis. The report found that one in 10 cases of intimate partner violence are projected to be linked to climate impacts by the end of the century, highlighting the ongoing violence women are already facing as climate disasters and effects escalate. The climate crisis is further entrenching gender inequality and patriarchal systems, despite the extensive research showing that gender equality and women’s leadership are driving solutions. We need more funding for the nexus of gender and climate, and investment in programs that integrate gender-based violence prevention, social safety nets, and women’s engagement in decision-making to stop violence against women and violence against the land.
