Have you ever noticed how many industrial facilities are in your neighborhood? Do you see vacant lots that could be transformed into a new small business or community gardens? These different types of land uses fall under their own zoning codes, determining what kinds of businesses can go where. Based on the map shown here, a disproportionately high number of industrial and manufacturing facilities are located on the south side of Chicago, which is leading to residents being exposed to higher levels of health-harming pollution. However, it doesn’t always have to be this way. Check out N4EJ + People for Community Recovery (PCR)’s one-pager about land use and zoning in Chicago to learn more about these city-wide processes and what action you can take to help change the zoning conditions in your neighborhood.
