📸 Sharon Lockhart’s camera doesn’t capture poses, it captures presence. Her Pine Flat Portrait Studio (2005) offers an intimate look at the youth of Pine Flat, a rural town in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains. The project captures a community where, during the day, adults commuted to work, leaving the impression of a place inhabited entirely by children. For this series, Lockhart set up a black backdrop in a barn, allowing the children to be photographed on their own terms—without sentimentality or nostalgia. Completed over three years, the series quietly tracks the kids growing up before our eyes — you can see the change in portraits like Pine Flat Portrait Studio, Matthew, Matthew, (2005) where time and growth are written across the boy’s face in the side-by-side photographs. In stand-alone works like Pine Flat Portrait Studio, Ryan, or Pine Flat Portrait Studio, Sierra, Lockhart depicts the stillness, strength, and quiet confidence of her subjects. Like an ethnographic study, the project reveals the rhythms and resilience of a place, through the faces of its youth. These works are currently being kept safe in our vault.
