Description

Alpha Chi Rho Fraternity

Alpha Chi Rho (ΑΧΡ), commonly known as the Crows, is a U.S.-based nonprofit social fraternity established on June 4, 1895, at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Founded by Reverend Paul Ziegler, his son Carl Ziegler, and their friends William H. Rouse, Herbert T. Sherriff, and Reverend William A.D. Eardeley, the fraternity emphasizes values of character, honor, and integrity.

History

Alpha Chi Rho was established by a group of men who were not invited to join the existing fraternity, Beta Beta, which later became part of Psi Upsilon. This led Reverend Ziegler to create a fraternity with distinct ideals. The first formal meeting took place in Ziegler's room at Trinity College. Initially met with skepticism by older fraternities, Alpha Chi Rho was one of the first groups to address issues like hazing and alcohol abuse. It became a charter member of the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) in 1909.

Principles and Mission

The fraternity's foundation is built on the Landmarks, which emphasize:

  • Membership based on intrinsic worth, rather than external factors such as race, creed, nationality, or sexual orientation.
  • A high moral standard.
  • The duty of brotherly love among members.
  • The goal of creating a brotherhood where all men are valued equally.

Alpha Chi Rho's mission is to cultivate lifelong brotherhood by challenging and inspiring its members to improve themselves, their fraternity, and society through character, honor, and integrity.

Chapters and Expansion

Alpha Chi Rho has expanded across the United States, with chapters initially established in the East and later reaching both coasts. Notable chapters include those at Trinity College, Yale University, and Penn State. The fraternity has experienced growth and has also faced periods of dormancy, with some chapters being re-established.

Services and Activities

Alpha Chi Rho offers various services to its members, including scholarships, loans, and grants through the Alpha Chi Rho Educational Foundation. It promotes leadership development and community service, and provides networking opportunities for its alumni. The fraternity organizes annual events like Conclave and Leadership Institute to strengthen bonds among its members.

Symbols and Publications

The fraternity's symbol is the Labarum, and its colors are garnet and white. The motto is "ΑΝΔΡΙΖΕΣΘΕ – Be Men." Alpha Chi Rho publishes Garnet & White, which serves as a communication tool for its chapters and alumni.
