The rooftop sensory garden at UPMC Mercy Pavilion got a spring makeover from students at the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children this week. The garden includes plants not only for their color, but also their texture, aroma, and taste, offering a full sensory experience. Patients at both the UPMC Vision Institute - which is headquartered at the pavilion - and the UPMC Rehabilitation Institute, which offers services in the building as well - can use the garden to learn how to navigate outdoor spaces, like sidewalks and various ground textures like grass, wood, and pavers, independently in a safe environment as part of occupational therapy.
