The Milwaukee Art Museum Inc

The Milwaukee Art Museum Inc is a nonprofit organization that operates the Milwaukee Art Museum, the largest art institution in Wisconsin. Founded with roots tracing back to 1888, the Museum serves as a crucial cultural resource and an iconic architectural landmark in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

History

The origins of the Milwaukee Art Museum date back to the establishment of Milwaukee's first art gallery by Frederick Layton in 1888. Layton, a prominent local businessman and art patron, commissioned a dedicated building known as the Layton Art Gallery to house his collection and to provide a public art gallery for the city. Simultaneously, the Milwaukee Art Association was founded, later becoming the Milwaukee Art Institute, which expanded Milwaukee’s art presence during the early 20th century.

In 1957, the Layton Art Gallery and Milwaukee Art Institute collections were consolidated into the Eero Saarinen–designed War Memorial Center, marking a new chapter of growth. Further expansion took place in 1975 with a new building addition designed by David Kahler. The Museum's modern identity was solidified with the 2001 unveiling of the Quadracci Pavilion by Santiago Calatrava. This addition not only increased public gathering spaces but also established a distinctive architectural symbol for Milwaukee.

Mission

The mission of the Milwaukee Art Museum is to collect, preserve, and present works of art as a vital source of inspiration and education for the community. The organization emphasizes connecting people with art, fostering engagement, and providing cultural enrichment in the region.

Facilities

Situated on a 24-acre lakeside campus in downtown Milwaukee, the Museum comprises a variety of exhibition spaces, educational facilities, and public gathering areas. The Quadracci Pavilion, with its iconic movable wing-like brise soleil, is a signature feature that underscores the Museum’s blend of art and innovative architecture.

Community Role

As Wisconsin’s largest art institution, the Milwaukee Art Museum plays a pivotal role in the local and regional arts ecosystem. It hosts diverse exhibitions, educational programs, and community initiatives, fostering an appreciation of art and culture among visitors of all ages.
