Job's Daughters International
Job's Daughters International (JDI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is a leadership organization for girls and young women between the ages of 10 and 20. Founded in 1920, the organization is designed to foster skills such as leadership, teamwork, public speaking, and charity, while respecting tradition and shaping the future for its members.
Mission and Purpose
The mission of JDI is centered on creating strong young women. It emphasizes self-reliance and independence, drawing inspiration from the story of Job, a biblical figure known for his resilience and faith. The organization encourages its members to grow in a safe and supportive environment, where they can develop their voice and gain confidence.
Structure and Membership
JDI operates through local chapters known as "Bethels," which are found in several countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil, and the Philippines. Membership is open to girls who are related to or are sponsored by a Master Mason and believe in a higher power. The organization is not part of the Masonic Fraternity but maintains close ties with it.
Activities and Programs
Members of JDI engage in a variety of activities such as bimonthly meetings, fundraisers, service projects, leadership workshops, and social events like theme parties and dances. These activities are organized and led by the members themselves, with guidance from certified adult volunteers who undergo training through the Certified Adult Volunteer (CAV) program.
Philanthropy
One of JDI's notable charitable efforts is the Hearing Improvement Kids Endowment (HIKE) Fund, established in 1985 to provide hearing devices to children with hearing impairments whose families cannot afford them. Each year, the HIKE Fund helps approximately 100 children.
Financial Overview
As a nonprofit, JDI relies on contributions, program services, and other forms of income. Contributions constitute a significant portion of its revenue, averaging about 70% in recent years. The organization also benefits from sales of merchandise and other fundraising activities.
Diversity and Inclusivity
JDI promotes diversity and inclusivity, fostering an environment where girls from diverse backgrounds can come together for personal growth and community service. The organization is committed to embracing inclusive practices, supporting equal opportunities, and countering bias and prejudice.
Leadership and Community Impact
By empowering young women to become leaders, JDI plays a significant role in shaping the next generation of leaders. Members learn vital skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and public speaking, which prepare them for roles in business, society, and governance. The organization also offers opportunities for members to form lasting friendships and connections through its international sisterhood network.
Scholarships and Educational Support
In addition to its leadership development programs, JDI participates in scholarship initiatives. The organization, along with associated Masonic bodies, offers college scholarships to deserving members, often with specific consideration for certain fields of study. These scholarships aim to support young women in achieving their academic and professional goals.
