International Association of Lions Clubs
The International Association of Lions Clubs (EIN: 222095641) is a prominent US-based nonprofit organization focused on community service and humanitarian efforts. Founded in 1917 in Chicago, Illinois, it was established by Melvin Jones, a Chicago business leader, who envisioned business clubs expanding their focus beyond commerce to broader community betterment. This led to the formation of the Association of Lions Clubs, which held its first national convention in Dallas, Texas later that year. The organization adopted the name Lions Clubs International as it expanded internationally starting in 1920[1][4][5].
History
The association began when Melvin Jones proposed to members of his local business club the idea of serving their communities beyond business interests. His vision was embraced by the Business Circle of Chicago, and after connecting with similar groups across the US, an organizational meeting took place on June 7, 1917. Twelve men founded the Association of Lions Clubs and convened a national convention in October 1917. Dr. William P. Woods was elected the first president, while Jones served as acting secretary and remained a guiding figure until his death in 1961. The organization went international in 1920 with the establishment of a Lions club in Windsor, Canada[1][4][5].
Mission and Service
Lions Clubs International focuses on various humanitarian and community service projects. A central area of work is aid for the blind and visually impaired, inspired by Helen Kellerβs 1925 appeal at the international convention to be βKnights of the Blind.β The organization supports initiatives such as Sight First and Lions World Sight Day, raising awareness and funds for blindness prevention and treatment around the world[1].
Beyond vision-related projects, Lions Clubs conduct health screenings for hearing and cancer and have contributed to medical research. For example, in Perth, Australia, Lions have provided hearing screenings for decades and helped found the Lions Ear and Hearing Institute. In Brisbane, the Lions Medical Research Foundation has funded research leading to significant medical advances, including the initial work on the HPV vaccine for cervical cancer[1].
Global Impact and Partnerships
Lions Clubs International is one of the largest service organizations worldwide, with clubs spanning many countries. Since the founding of the United Nations in 1945, Lions Clubs have been active in supporting its mission and were among the NGOs invited to assist in drafting the UN Charter[1].
The International Association of Lions Clubs represents a century-long commitment to community service and humanitarian aid, with a special emphasis on sight, hearing, and health-related concerns globally. Its growth from a local business club initiative to a worldwide network highlights its impact and enduring legacy.
