Metropolitan Fire Association Inc.

The Metropolitan Fire Association Inc., also known as Metro Fire, is a nonprofit organization primarily based in Staten Island, New York. It was founded in 1976 by a group of New York City firefighters and police officers.

Mission and Purpose

The organization focuses on promoting public safety and providing community service through emergency response and youth education programs. It aims to encourage members to learn about firefighting, law enforcement, and emergency medical services, and to pursue careers in these fields. Additionally, Metropolitan Fire Association supports the Explorer Post through the Boy Scouts of America's Learning for Life program, teaching young adults about emergency services and related professions.

History

Metropolitan Fire Association was named in tribute to New York City's first paid fire department, the Metropolitan Fire District, formed in the late 1880s. Over the years, the organization has evolved to meet community needs, especially in times of emergencies. In 2001, many of its members responded to assist during and after the September 11 attacks.

In the late 1990s, the organization restructured its leadership and purpose. By 2002, it had acquired new equipment and facilities at Seaview Hospital and Rehabilitation Center in Staten Island. This expansion allowed for more extensive training and community service efforts.

Operations and Programs

Metropolitan Fire Association offers training to young adults in firefighting, incident command systems, CPR & First Aid, and emergency preparedness. Members participate in parades, competitions, and special events while preparing for civil service exams.

The organization is tax-exempt under the U.S. Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3), which means donations to it are deductible.

Financial Overview

As of recent financial reports, Metropolitan Fire Association's primary source of revenue is contributions from donors, with minimal investment income and no liabilities. The organization operates with a relatively small budget but remains committed to its community service goals.
