People to People International (PTPI) is a US-based nonprofit organization founded in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Its primary objective is to enhance international understanding and friendship through educational, cultural, and humanitarian activities. History

Founded on September 11, 1956, PTPI initially operated under the United States Information Agency. After President Eisenhower left office in 1961, he privatized the organization, transforming it into a not-for-profit corporation in Missouri. Notable figures like Joyce C. Hall, Walt Disney, and Bob Hope were early leaders and supporters. Over the years, PTPI has expanded its operations to numerous countries.

Programs and Activities

PTPI offers a variety of programs designed to enhance international understanding:

• Educational and Humanitarian Initiatives: These include adult travel programs and student experiences that integrate service work.
• Peace Camp: A free international program for students focusing on peace education.
• School and Classroom Program: An international pen pal initiative aimed at fostering global connections.

In 2006, PTPI was awarded the Cavaliere per la Pace (Knight of Peace Award), marking the first time this honor was bestowed on an organization. PTPI has collaborated with other organizations and participated in initiatives like Operation Iraqi Children, later renamed Operation International Children, which supported children in conflict zones by partnering with American troops.

Financial Challenges and Restructuring

People to People International faced significant financial difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a bankruptcy filing in March 2022. Despite this, chapters continue to operate independently, ensuring that local initiatives and cultural exchanges continue.

International Presence

PTPI has established a global network of chapters, connecting individuals across over 160 countries. It seeks to maintain a vibrant community through membership programs and cultural exchanges.
