Pittsburgh Philharmonic
The Pittsburgh Philharmonic is a non-profit organization based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, serving as Southwestern Pennsylvania's premier volunteer community orchestra. It was originally founded in 1975 as the North Pittsburgh Civic Symphony and later renamed the North Pittsburgh Philharmonic until 2007. The name change to the Pittsburgh Philharmonic reflects the diverse membership and audience base from across the greater Pittsburgh area.
Mission
The organization has a dual mission:
- Community Service: To provide a variety of classical music performances and educational entertainment for the community, focusing on affordable and accessible concerts.
- Musician Development: To offer opportunities for amateur and professional musicians to collaborate and share music.
Structure and Membership
The Pittsburgh Philharmonic comprises approximately 70 members ranging in age from 15 to 80, drawn from across the tri-state area. Many members have been part of the orchestra for over 20 years and have notable credentials, including teaching music, playing professionally, or holding advanced music degrees.
Performances and Repertoire
The orchestra performs masterworks of the repertoire, popular classics, and supports the creation of new works through accessible performances. It has premiered several original compositions, including works by local composers. Regular season performances are held at the Greater Pittsburgh Masonic Center.
Funding
As a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, the Pittsburgh Philharmonic relies on generous contributions from corporate sponsors and private donations to support its activities.
Leadership
The organization is led by a music director and guided by a Board of Directors. Notably, guest conductors and collaborations enrich its musical offerings, contributing to the orchestra's strength and depth in providing more than just concerts, but also educational programs to inspire young people.
Non-Profit Status
The Pittsburgh Philharmonic obtained its non-profit status in 1992, under EIN number 25-1654288, further solidifying its commitment to artistic development and quality programming in the community.
