Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas

The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas, commonly known as the Grand Lodge of Texas, is a fraternity and nonprofit organization in Texas. This body is the largest governing entity for Freemasonry in the state.

History

The history of Freemasonry in Texas dates back to the early 19th century. In 1828, Stephen F. Austin convened a meeting of Masons in San Felipe de Austin to petition for a charter, but this effort was thwarted due to Mexican government restrictions on Freemasonry. In March 1835, a group of six Masons, including Anson Jones, met near Brazoria to seek a dispensation from the Grand Lodge of Louisiana to establish a lodge in Texas. This led to the formation of Holland Lodge No. 36, with its charter issued on January 27, 1836.

Establishment and Development

Following the establishment of Holland Lodge, two more lodges were chartered by the Grand Lodge of Louisiana: Milam Lodge No. 40 in Nacogdoches and McFarland Lodge No. 41 in San Augustine, both in 1837. These lodges, along with Holland Lodge, led to the creation of the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas in Houston. Anson Jones was elected as the first Grand Master of Masons in Texas, and he later served as President of the Republic of Texas. After Texas became a state, the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas transitioned into the Grand Lodge of Texas.

The Grand Lodge of Texas continues to play a significant role in Texas society. Its members are involved in various charitable activities, including programs to assist the elderly, youth educational initiatives, and support for children's hospitals through their affiliation with other Masonic organizations such as the Scottish Rite and Shrine.
