TO PROVIDE BENEFITS TO VARIOUS VETERANS AND OTHER CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS

American Legion

The American Legion is a U.S. nonprofit organization designated by the IRS as a 501(c)(19) war veterans' organization. It was founded from March 15 to 17, 1919, in Paris, France, by members of the American Expeditionary Forces following World War I. The organization received its national charter from the U.S. Congress on September 16, 1919, and has since become the largest wartime veterans service organization in the United States[1][2][3].

History

The idea for the American Legion was conceived during discussions between officers like Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt Jr. and George S. White, who recognized the need for a post-war veterans organization to address the challenges faced by returning soldiers. This led to a caucus in Paris where the organization was formally established[3][4].

Mission and Activities

The American Legion is committed to serving veterans, promoting patriotism, and advocating for strong national security. Its activities include providing support services for disabled veterans, advocating for veteran benefits, and promoting youth education through programs like the Boys State and Boys Nation. The Legion has been instrumental in shaping U.S. legislation beneficial to veterans, notably the GI Bill and the establishment of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs[2][3].

Structure and Membership

The American Legion is organized into local posts across the U.S. and has a diverse membership of veterans from various conflicts, including World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, and more recent hostilities. The organization remains nonpolitical and nonsectarian, requiring honorable service and discharge for membership[2][3].

Achievements
  • Veterans Benefits and Legislation: The Legion has played a crucial role in drafting and advocating for veterans' benefits legislation, such as the GI Bill, which enabled many veterans to pursue education and housing benefits[2][3].
  • Youth Programs: The organization offers youth programs like Boys State, which teaches young people about democratic governance[2][3].
  • Community Engagement: The American Legion supports various community projects, including sponsorship of Boy Scout troops, baseball teams, and civic activities[4][5].
Affiliations

The Legion has several affiliated organizations, including the Sons of The American Legion and Forty and Eight[3].

Current Status

As of the early 21st century, the American Legion had around three million members, though membership numbers have fluctuated over the years. The organization continues to advocate for veterans' rights and supports a wide range of community programs[2][3].
