Michigan’s air, water and places we love are under constant threat — and protecting them takes all of us. That’s why we’ve joined 1% for the Planet as an official Environmental Partner. Now, it’s easier than ever for Michigan businesses to give back by directing 1% of their annual profits to power our work for a cleaner, healthier future. Know a local business that should join the movement? Tag them in the comments below and let them know they can make a difference through 1% for the Planet. https://www.onepercentfortheplanet.org/ (fb)

🚨 Two bills moving through the Michigan Legislature could seriously threaten our water. House Bills 4257 and 4265 would reclassify digestate—a waste byproduct from biodigesters that process manure and food waste—as solid waste rather than liquid. Why does that matter? Because it would weaken oversight of toxic materials that can include PFAS, heavy metals, E. coli, and more. This waste can easily move through soil and into groundwater, yet the bills would allow it to be managed under voluntary standards that don’t actually exist. As our Water Policy Director Megan Tinsley said during a recent hearing: “Michigan has over 1.2 million private household drinking water wells. Treating hazardous waste as a solid product and relying on a set of voluntary standards that don’t actually even exist for this cocktail of ingredients is a true recipe for disaster.” We can’t afford to risk our drinking water, public health, and freshwater ecosystems to benefit polluting industries. Michigan’s water is too valuable. Read more from Planet Detroit here: (fb)
