National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution
National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution
The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) is a lineage-based membership service organization for women who are direct descendants of patriots of the American Revolutionary War. Founded on October 11, 1890, the organization is dedicated to historic preservation, education, patriotism, and community service.
Founders and History
The NSDAR was founded by Mary Smith Lockwood, Eugenia Washington, Ellen Hardin Walworth, and Mary Desha. The formation of the society was prompted by the Sons of the American Revolution's refusal to admit women as members. The first meeting was held at the Strathmore Arms in Washington, D.C., marking the beginning of a patriotic lineage society that would spread across the United States and other countries.
Membership and Eligibility
Membership in the NSDAR is limited to women aged 18 or older who are direct lineal descendants of patriots from the American Revolution era. These patriots include soldiers, government officials, and individuals who provided material or financial support to the war effort. Applicants must provide documentation of their lineage to qualify for membership.
Activities and Programs
- Educational Support: The NSDAR supports several schools that provide educational opportunities for underprivileged students. These include Berry College, Crossnore School, Kate Duncan Smith DAR School, Hillside School, and Hindman Settlement School. Additionally, the organization offers scholarships and financial aid to Native American students at Chemawa Indian School and Bacone College.
- Patriotic and Community Service: Members engage in volunteer work, particularly supporting veterans through hours of service at VA hospitals and non-VA facilities. The organization also sponsors programs celebrating the Constitution, supports naturalization ceremonies, and provides aid to current military personnel.
- Historical Preservation: The NSDAR maintains a genealogical library and Americana collection, which are valuable resources for researchers. Exhibits at the organization's headquarters showcase historical artifacts, including quilts and embroidery pieces, highlighting American craftsmanship and cultural traditions.
Publications and Affiliations
The NSDAR publishes American Spirit Magazine (formerly known as Daughters Magazine from 2001 to 2008) and has an affiliation with the Children of the American Revolution, an organization for youth descendants of Revolutionary patriots.
Impact and Legacy
With over 190,000 members and numerous local chapters across the U.S. and abroad, the NSDAR has become a prominent force in promoting American history, patriotism, and service. Its efforts in historical preservation and community service continue to inspire new generations of members and supporters.
