First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association
The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association (FCSLA), now also known as FCSLA Life, is a U.S.-based nonprofit fraternal benefit society. Founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1892, it was established by Anna Hurban and eight other Slovak immigrant homemakers. The organization was initially created to provide death and injury benefits to families, particularly those affected by industrial labor hazards. Father Stephen Furdek encouraged the formation of the society.
History
FCSLA was officially chartered on October 29, 1899, after filing with the Ohio Secretary of State. By 1899, the society had grown to 1,859 members across 83 branches, with monthly dues of 14 cents per member. By 1942, FCSLA had 65,000 members and $12 million in assets. In 1945, the society merged with the Cleveland Slovak Union. Over the years, FCSLA has evolved, changing its name to the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association in the late 1960s to avoid confusion with labor unions.
Mission and Activities
The organization's mission is to provide financial security to its members while maintaining Catholic values and Slavic traditions. FCSLA has been involved in various community and charitable activities, including the establishment of a scholarship program. In recent years, under the leadership of Cynthia M. Maleski, FCSLA has expanded significantly, with over 500 branches across the U.S. The organization supports education and community development through scholarships and matching funds projects for local churches and nonprofits.
Anniversary Celebrations
In 2017, FCSLA celebrated its 125th anniversary with a grand event in Cleveland, marking its growth into a business with over $900 million in assets and 115,000 members. This milestone highlighted the organization's commitment to its mission and its role in supporting Slovak-American communities.
Leadership and Growth
Cynthia M. Maleski, who served as National President and CEO from 2012 until her retirement in 2025, led significant growth and strategic initiatives at FCSLA, including expanding its footprint and strengthening financial stability. The organization is now led by Michael J. Agan, who continues to uphold FCSLA's values of Family, Faith, and Financial Security.
