International Order of the Rainbow for Girls
Overview
The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls (IORG) is a Masonic youth service organization that teaches leadership skills through community service. Founded in 1922 by Reverend W. Mark Sexson, a 33° Mason, in McAlester, Oklahoma, the organization aims to instill qualities such as faith, hope, and charity in its members.
History
Reverend Sexson created IORG after being inspired by his experiences with the Order of DeMolay, a similar organization for boys. He was encouraged to develop a similar group for girls during an address before the South McAlester Chapter #149 of the Order of the Eastern Star. The first initiation ceremony took place on April 6, 1922, at the Scottish Rite Temple in McAlester, where 171 young women became the first members[1][2].
Purpose
IORG focuses on developing young women's leadership skills, promoting community service, and teaching valuable life lessons. Members learn about the seven virtues represented by the colors of the rainbow: Love, Religion, Nature, Immortality, Fidelity, Patriotism, and Service[3][4]. The organization emphasizes faith, hope, and charity, and it is open to girls of all backgrounds from age 11 to 20, regardless of their family's Masonic ties[2][4].
Membership
To become a member, interested young women must submit an application and attend a meeting with assembly members. They are required to believe in a Supreme Being and meet certain personal criteria, such as not being married or pregnant. Once accepted, they participate in an initiation ceremony[2].
Operations
IORG operates over 850 assemblies globally, with locations in 46 U.S. states and several countries including Aruba, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Paraguay, the Philippines, Italy, Mexico, and Romania[2][5]. Assemblies meet regularly to learn parliamentary procedures and engage in community projects. The organization's headquarters is located in McAlester, Oklahoma, at the International Temple, which was built for IORG between 1950 and 1951[4][5].
Structure
Each assembly is part of a jurisdiction, often aligned with state or national borders. Leadership positions within assemblies help members develop organizational skills and prepare them for future careers[3].
Impact
Through its community service projects and leadership training, IORG works to empower young women to become active contributors to their societies. By emphasizing service and personal development, the organization aims to foster positive change in local communities worldwide[3][4].
