National Society Daughters of the American Revolution

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (abbreviated as DAR or NSDAR) is a lineage-based membership service organization for women. It was founded to honor and preserve the legacy of those who contributed to the American Revolution and to promote values such as historic preservation, education, and patriotism.

Founding and History

DAR was established on October 11, 1890, by Mary Smith Lockwood, Eugenia Washington (a great-grandniece of George Washington), Ellen Hardin Walworth, and Mary Desha. The organization was formed after the Sons of the American Revolution denied membership to women. The first chapter was organized at the Strathmore Arms in Washington, D.C.

Membership and Eligibility

Membership in the DAR is open to women who are direct lineal descendants of patriots of the American Revolutionary War. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and provide documentation of their lineage, typically through a birth certificate and genealogical research.

Activities and Programs

  • Historic Preservation: DAR supports the preservation of historic sites, monuments, and artifacts across the United States.
  • Education: The organization provides scholarships and supports educational programs for students with special needs. It also offers educational initiatives such as essay contests and youth programs.
  • Patriotism and Community Service: DAR members engage in various patriotic activities, such as supporting veterans and participating in naturalization ceremonies.
  • Genealogical Research: DAR operates a genealogical library at its headquarters, providing resources for family research and American history.

Schools and Scholarships

DAR supports several schools that cater to special student needs: Berry College in Georgia, Crossnore School in North Carolina, Kate Duncan Smith DAR School in Alabama, Hillside School in Massachusetts, and Hindman Settlement School in Kentucky. Additionally, DAR offers scholarships to Native American students.

Leadership and Membership

As of recent reports, the organization has a membership of over 190,000 women. The President General oversees the leadership of the society.

Publications and Affiliations

DAR publishes American Spirit Magazine and previously American Monthly. The organization is affiliated with the Children of the American Revolution and maintains a significant genealogical library.

Exhibits and Library

The DAR maintains a rich collection of historical exhibits and a library at its headquarters in Washington, D.C. The library is open to members and non-members and provides access to extensive American genealogy and historical resources.

Civic Engagements

DAR members volunteer extensively, particularly in supporting veterans through visits and care packages. They also participate in Constitution Week celebrations and naturalization ceremonies.

The DAR continues to play a significant role in historical preservation, education, and community service, celebrating its lineage and commitment to American heritage.
