Toastmasters International
Toastmasters International (TI) is a US-based nonprofit educational organization dedicated to helping individuals develop communication, public speaking, and leadership skills through a network of local clubs worldwide.
Formation and History
Toastmasters International was formally established on October 22, 1924, by Ralph C. Smedley in Santa Ana, California. Smedley, who worked with the YMCA, envisioned a club where young men could practice public speaking and leadership skills in a supportive environment. The first unofficial meeting of a Toastmasters-like club took place earlier on March 24, 1905, during Smedley's tenure at the Bloomington YMCA in Illinois.
Toastmasters gained international status in 1932 with the establishment of its first international chapter in Vancouver, Canada. The organization incorporated as a nonprofit under Californian law on December 19, 1932. Women were first admitted to the organization in 1973, marking a significant step towards inclusivity.
Purpose and Structure
The primary objective of Toastmasters International is to foster a supportive environment where members can improve their public speaking and leadership abilities. Each club typically consists of 20 to 30 members and holds regular meetings, usually weekly or biweekly. These gatherings involve prepared speeches, impromptu speaking exercises known as Table Topics, and evaluations aimed at providing constructive feedback.
Toastmasters uses a local club-based structure, with an average club size of around 20 members. Meetings are structured to include various roles such as Toastmaster, Evaluator, Timer, and Grammarian, each contributing to the learning environment.
Education Programs
The organization offers several educational programs tailored to improve communication and leadership skills:
- Pathways: Introduced as a modern education system, Pathways provides eleven learning paths. These paths focus on public speaking, interpersonal communication, management, strategic leadership, and confidence development, each comprising 14 projects. The content is available in multiple languages.
- Competent Communication Manual: This traditional manual guides members through ten speeches designed to enhance basic communication skills. Upon completing these speeches, members receive a globally recognized certificate.
- Speechcraft: A short-term program designed for non-members, conducted by experienced Toastmasters.
