Toastmasters International

Formation and History

Toastmasters International was formally established on October 22, 1924, by Ralph C. Smedley in Santa Ana, California. Smedley, who worked with the YMCA, envisioned a club where young men could practice public speaking and leadership skills in a supportive environment. The first unofficial meeting of a Toastmasters-like club took place earlier on March 24, 1905, during Smedley's tenure at the Bloomington YMCA in Illinois.

• Competent Communication Manual: This traditional manual guides members through ten speeches designed to enhance basic communication skills. Upon completing these speeches, members receive a globally recognized certificate.
• Speechcraft: A short-term program designed for non-members, conducted by experienced Toastmasters.
