Continuing the work of Saint Jeanne Jugan, our mission is to offer the neediest elderly of every race and religion a home where they will be welcomed as Christ, cared for as family and accompanied with dignity until God calls them to himself.

Little Sisters of the Poor

The Little Sisters of the Poor are an international congregation of Roman Catholic women religious dedicated to caring for the elderly poor. Their presence in Pennsylvania, particularly in cities like Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, reflects a rich history of service to the needy.

History

Founding and Early Years: The Little Sisters of the Poor were founded by Saint Jeanne Jugan in 1839. Their mission expanded to the United States in the late 19th century, with establishments in several cities, including Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. In Philadelphia, Archbishop Wood invited the Little Sisters in 1869 to care for the elderly poor, marking the beginning of their work in the city[1][4]. In Pittsburgh, they arrived on April 25, 1872, establishing a home for elderly men and women[5].

Mission and Activities

The Little Sisters of the Poor are dedicated to offering the neediest elderly a welcoming home, where they are cared for with dignity and compassion. Their mission encompasses a spirit of hospitality and reverence for human life, regardless of race or religion[2]. In Pennsylvania, their homes provide essential care and support, fostering a sense of family and community among residents.

Impact

Over the years, the Little Sisters have made a significant impact on the communities they serve. In Pittsburgh, for example, they have cared for over 12,000 elderly individuals, reflecting their enduring commitment to the elder poor[5]. Across Pennsylvania, their contributions to social welfare and community service are highly valued.

Values and Vision

The congregation adheres to core values of reverence for life, family spirit, humble service, compassion, and stewardship. Their vision includes celebrating the wisdom of age and nurturing communities that value each person's uniqueness[2]. These principles guide their operations in Pennsylvania, ensuring a holistic and person-centered approach to elderly care.

Facilities in Pennsylvania

The Little Sisters operate several facilities across the state, including in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. In Philadelphia, early establishments included St. Mary’s Home and later expansions to St. Michael’s Home in Germantown and Sacred Heart Home in Southwest Philadelphia. Sacred Heart Home was rebuilt and renamed Holy Family Home in the early 1970s[3]. In Pittsburgh, their long-standing presence has been a cornerstone of community support for the elderly.
