Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of North Dakota
The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of North Dakota, commonly known as the Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free & Accepted Masons of North Dakota, is a non-profit fraternal organization that serves as the governing body for Freemasonry in the state of North Dakota. The Grand Lodge oversees a network of local Masonic lodges across the state, adhering to the Anglo-American tradition of Freemasonry prevalent in the United States.
History
The first Masonic presence in what is now North Dakota dates back to the early exploration period, with Meriwether Lewis, a member of a lodge from Missouri, being among the first recorded Masons in the area. However, the first organized Masonic lodge in the Dakota Territory was established by the Grand Lodge of Iowa in 1862, although this initial lodge eventually lost its dispensation.
Over time, both the Grand Lodges of Iowa and Minnesota chartered additional Masonic lodges in Dakota Territory. Notably, by 1875, six lodges were established in what would become South Dakota by the Grand Lodge of Iowa, while the Grand Lodge of Minnesota chartered Shiloh Lodge in Fargo and Bismarck Lodge. Yellowstone Lodge was another early presence, operating from 1871 to 1874.
The Grand Lodge of North Dakota itself was formally established in June 1889, when 20 lodges from the northern part of Dakota Territory came together to organize a separate governing body for North Dakota. This decision was made at a convention where these lodges adopted a constitution and elected officers, marking the beginning of the Grand Lodge of North Dakota as an independent entity.
Organization and Activities
The Grand Lodge of North Dakota is dedicated to promoting the principles of Freemasonry, which include Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. These principles are taught through allegorical rituals and degrees that emphasize personal improvement and community service. Masonic activities in North Dakota involve both social and civic engagement, with members participating in local community projects and supporting charitable causes.
Recognition and Intervisitation
The Grand Lodge of North Dakota recognizes and allows intervisitation with certain Prince Hall Masonic Grand Lodges, following a formal approval process that began in 1991 and was expanded in 1998. This recognition facilitates fraternal interactions between these organizations.
Purpose and Membership
Freemasonry in North Dakota aims to foster a community of individuals striving for self-improvement and unity, welcoming men of good character who are at least 18 years old. The organization cherishes its rich historical traditions while engaging in contemporary societal contributions. As part of the oldest and largest fraternal organization worldwide, the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of North Dakota continue to build upon the cornerstones of friendship, benevolence, and personal development.
