On May 14, the American Nuclear Society had the honor of joining a very engaged nuclear energy town hall in Tilden, Texas—hosted by McMullen County and America’s Rural Energy Coalition. The State of Texas is leading two federal court challenges against the NRC, potentially upending decades of regulations and precedents. One case, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission v. Texas—which is about the NRC's jurisdiction over licensing spent nuclear fuel storage—has woven its way up to the U.S. Supreme Court following a decision from the Fifth Circuit. A Supreme Court decision, which is expected in June, could reshape the landscape of nuclear licensing and impact the storage and disposal of spent nuclear fuel across the U.S. The outcome could influence ongoing debates and policies surrounding SNF storage and NRC’s authority.
