First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association (FCSLA)

The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association (FCSLA), now operating under the rebranded name FCSLA Life, is a fraternal benefit society founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1892. It was established by nine Slovak immigrant homemakers, led by Anna Hurban, with the encouragement of Rev. Stephen Furdek. The organization initially aimed to provide financial protection, particularly death and injury benefits, to families facing the risks of industrial labor, a major concern during that era.

Early Years and Growth

By the end of its first year, the organization had grown from 9 members with $77 in assets to 95 members with $212 in assets. Over the years, it expanded rapidly. By 1927, it held a notable celebration marking its 35th anniversary in Cleveland, attended by thousands. In the 1930s, the union faced and adapted to the challenges of the Great Depression, implementing waivers to support destitute families. The organization continued to grow, and by the late 1960s, it had undergone significant changes, including mergers with other like-minded organizations.

Expansion and Change

In the 1960s, the organization's name was officially changed from First Catholic Slovak Ladies Union to First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association to avoid confusion with labor unions. This change marked a shift towards a more inclusive membership, welcoming individuals from diverse ethnic backgrounds and expanding beyond women to include children and men. The association has continued to evolve, most notably by rebranding as FCSLA Life to emphasize its mission of providing financial security while embracing Catholic and Slavic traditions.

Recent Developments

In 2017, the association celebrated its 125th anniversary. It had grown to over $900 million in assets and included 115,000 members operating in 48 states and the District of Columbia. The organization welcomes the membership of the Polish Women's Alliance of America and the Polish Union of the United States of North America, further expanding its membership base. Today, FCSLA Life is recognized for its financial stability, receiving an A- (Excellent) rating from A.M. Best.
