Stockbridge Community Outreach Association
Stockbridge Community Outreach Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in the early 1980s to provide assistance to residents within the Stockbridge Community School District. The organization primarily functions as a food pantry, crisis center, and referral service.
Mission and Services
The primary mission of Stockbridge Community Outreach is to offer emergency support and ongoing services to low-income individuals and families. Its core services include:
- Food Assistance: The organization operates a food pantry, a weekly fresh food distribution program, and hosts monthly government food distributions. Programs like Tide Me Over provide weekend food assistance to students eligible for free or reduced lunch.
- Financial Assistance: Support is available for utility shutoffs, rent, and eviction prevention, gas vouchers for medical appointments, and prescription co-pay assistance.
- Clothing and Household Goods: A free clothing room and small household goods area are available to the public without qualification.
- Holiday Programs: Special programs are offered during Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, including an adopt-a-family initiative during Christmas.
- Referral Services: The organization provides referrals to other agencies for specific needs not covered by its services.
Eligibility and Programs
To receive assistance with utilities, rent, or prescription costs, individuals must register as clients by proving residency within the district and demonstrating income below 200% of the federal poverty level. Programs such as the monthly curbside food giveaways and weekly "Pop Up" distributions are open to anyone in need.
Operations and Funding
Stockbridge Community Outreach operates from the Stockbridge Activity Center, using donated resources and funding. Monetary donations are highly valued as they allow the organization to purchase food and services at a lower cost compared to retail prices. The organization also accepts donations of clothing, household items, and non-perishable food. Volunteer opportunities include sorting donations, maintaining facilities, and helping with special events, particularly during holiday seasons.
Community Impact
By offering a range of support services, Stockbridge Community Outreach plays a vital role in addressing the immediate needs of low-income families within the Stockbridge area, fostering a sense of community through its programs and services.
