National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution
Located on the northwest slope of Capitol Hill in the historic Harvard-Belmont Landmark District, Rainier Chapter House continues the mission of its visionary founders by offering the house for magnificent personal, social, and corporate events In 1895 a group of women who were descendants of revolutionary patriots were granted national charter #155 by the National Society of the Daughters of the Revolution and became the Rainier Chapter of the NSDAR. Their mission is to support the platform of the NSDAR to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism. In order to further opportunities locally in support of this mission, the members of the Rainier Chapter raised funds to purchase property and build the Rainier Chapter House, which opened in 1925. Since that time, the Rainier Chapter House has been used for events to support NSDAR goals, serving as the venue for weddings, corporate events, galas, and educational forums.

National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution
The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR) is a lineage-based, non-profit organization for women who are direct descendants of individuals involved in the American Revolutionary War. Founded on October 11, 1890, the DAR focuses on promoting education, patriotism, historic preservation, and community service[1].
Founding and History
The DAR was established by Mary Smith Lockwood, Mary Desha, Ellen Hardin Walworth, and Eugenia Washington. The organization's first chapter was formed at the Strathmore Arms in Washington, D.C., following the refusal of the Sons of the American Revolution to include women as members[1]. The initial meeting was held on August 9, 1890, with subsequent organizational efforts culminating in the first official chapter on October 11, 1890[1].
Membership and Eligibility
To join the DAR, applicants must be at least 18 years old, provide a birth certificate showing female gender, and prove direct lineage to a patriot of the American Revolution[1]. The organization boasts over 190,000 members across the U.S. and internationally[1].
Mission and Activities
The DAR is dedicated to several key areas:
- Education: The DAR supports educational initiatives by contributing over $1 million annually to five schools, including Berry College, Crossnore School, Kate Duncan Smith DAR School, Hillside School, and Hindman Settlement School. Additionally, scholarships are provided to Native American youth at Chemawa Indian School and Bacone College[1].
- Historic Preservation: DAR members participate in the preservation of historical sites and properties. An example includes the Rainier Chapter House in Seattle, Washington, which is a Federalist-style mansion built in 1925[2].
- Patriotism and Community Service: Members engage in various projects, such as providing volunteer service to veterans, supporting troops abroad, and sponsoring Constitution Week programs[1].
Publications and Library
The DAR publishes several magazines, including American Spirit Magazine and Daughters Magazine. The organization also maintains a genealogical library at its headquarters in Washington, D.C., which offers resources for genealogy research and historical studies[1][5].
Local Chapters
The DAR has numerous local chapters, each contributing to the organization's mission. An example is the Rainier Chapter in Seattle, which was granted its charter in 1895 and is known for its historic Chapter House[4].
EIN
While the EIN mentioned, 237334580, pertains to a local chapter rather than the national organization, it reflects the broader structure of DAR chapters across the United States[4].
Conclusion
The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution continues to serve as a prominent organization in promoting American history, education, and community service while honoring the lineage of Revolutionary War patriots.
