Iwo Jimas biggest cost was the devastating loss of so many combat veterans in taking the island. The raising of the flag at Mount Suribachi inspired the nation to continue to the end of WWII. I read the words of an elderly veteran of the US 3rdMarine Division who was engaged in the heavy battle.
