Ramona Museum of California History, Inc.

The Ramona Museum of California History, Inc. is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and showcasing the history of California. Established with the support of the Ramona Parlor #109, part of the Native Sons of the Golden West, the museum opened its doors in 1972. It is notable for being part of the Ramona Parlor's community initiatives, which is the second-largest parlor in southern California and uniquely runs its own community museum.

History and Mission

The Ramona Museum was founded to offer a personal and comprehensive view of early California history. It houses an eclectic collection of artifacts and relics accumulated by its members since before the turn of the last century. Many of these relics hold significant historical value, as they were amassed by early notables in Los Angeles.

Exhibitions

The museum's collection includes a diverse range of historical items, such as a sprig of edelweiss dating to 1603, clothing and accessories from the mid-1890s, artifacts from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire, and unpublished photographs of Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. The collection also features an original early 20th-century law enforcement booking log.

Community Engagement

The museum is open to visitors, particularly on Saturdays, with special arrangements available for groups. It emphasizes community engagement, often hosting school children for hands-on lessons, allowing them to explore the tangible aspects of history. This educational approach aims to provide a deeper understanding of historical periods than what can be gained from textbooks alone.

Activities and Outreach

By offering free entry and interactive exhibitions, the museum fosters a broader appreciation for California's rich history. It caters to both local and visiting audiences, highlighting the importance of historical preservation and community involvement in maintaining cultural heritage.

Structure and Affiliations

The Ramona Museum operates as an integral part of the Ramona Parlor #109, which was chartered in 1887. As part of the Native Sons of the Golden West, it reflects a commitment to community and historical preservation within southern California.
