Mourning Cloaks One of the earliest butterflies you will see is the Morning Cloak. Don’t put a date on when they can be seen because it’s HIGHLY dependent on temperature, so some years you see them flying around as early as February and other years it can be as late as April. They survive the winter through diapause: slowing down metabolism and breathing, which is triggered by reduced photoperiod in fall. They overwinter in tree bark crevices, logs, or cracks in buildings where they’re protected from snow and ice. They can survive temps of down to -80 F! They are the earliest butterflies you see because they don’t have to metamorphose before emergence like most butterflies do. (fb)

As you begin to think about things to do this spring and summer, GRNA offers guided river walks. Have a group that would like a private 2-hour tour led by one of our knowledgeable naturalists? Experience the wetlands of Grass River by traversing over the wetlands on boardwalks to the river as a guide leads you in learning about our history, conservation efforts, and the local flora and fauna of GRNA. $100 fee minimum for a group. Please allow at least two-weeks notice to schedule a private tour. Private Tours: If you have a group interested in a private guided walking tour, contact james@grassriver.org to schedule in advance.
