Mission

The mission of the Maine Grain Alliance is to inspire and empower individuals building local grain economies. It fosters connections among farmers, bakers, brewers, and other stakeholders, sharing grain traditions and innovations to promote beneficial uses of grain for health, food independence, and community development[1][3].

Programs and Initiatives
  • Kneading Conference and Maine Artisan Bread Fair: These annual events in Skowhegan, Maine, bring together experts and enthusiasts in grain growing, milling, baking, brewing, and wood-fired oven construction. The events include intensive workshops, hands-on experiences, and networking opportunities[2][3].

  • Rare & Heritage Seed Restoration Program: Initiated in 2013, this program focuses on restoring and scaling up the production of rare and heritage grains suitable for Maine's climate. The goal is to expand the seed supply commercially, enhancing agricultural diversity[1][4].

  • Grain and Baking Education: Offers workshops, online resources, and learning materials on grain processing and baking techniques to support skill development in the industry[4].

  • Supporting Grain Farms: Provides equipment and technical assistance to help farms handle and process grains efficiently, ensuring high-quality products for local markets[3][4].

  • Technical Assistance Grants: Offers funding for grain-based businesses to improve their operations, innovate processes, or acquire necessary equipment[1][4].

Impact

Since its inception, the Maine Grain Alliance has impacted thousands of individuals worldwide through its conferences, educational programs, and economic support for grain-based businesses. The organization's efforts have contributed significantly to the revitalization of Maine's grain and malting industries[1][4].
