Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas

The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas, also known as the Grand Lodge of Texas, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, is a major governing body for Freemasonry in the state of Texas. With its roots tracing back to the Ancient Grand Lodge of England, it is one of the largest and most prominent Masonic organizations in the world.

History

The history of Masonry in Texas began with a meeting under an oak tree in Brazoria in March 1835, where six Masons gathered to initiate the formation of a lodge. They secured a dispensation from the Grand Lodge of Louisiana, leading to the creation of Holland Lodge No. 36, the first Masonic lodge in Texas. Anson Jones, who later became the first Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Texas and the fourth President of the Republic of Texas, served as its first Worshipful Master.

By 1837, two more lodges, Milam Lodge No. 40 and McFarland Lodge No. 41, were established in Nacogdoches and San Augustine, respectively. These three lodges sent representatives to a convention in Houston, which resulted in the establishment of the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas on April 16, 1838. Sam Houston played a significant role in the installation of its first officers on May 11, 1838. Following Texas's admission as a U.S. state, the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas became the Grand Lodge of Texas.

Freemasonry and the Texas Revolution

Many prominent figures of the Texas Revolution were Freemasons. James Bonham, James Bowie, David Crockett, Almaron Dickenson, and William Barrett Travis were among the defenders of the Alamo who were Masons. The Masonic tradition played a significant role during the conflict, as seen in the story of Almaron Dickenson giving his Masonic apron to his wife to protect her during the siege of the Alamo.

Purpose and Structure

Freemasonry is a fraternal organization dedicated to personal development and community service. Its rituals are rooted in biblical imagery, particularly the construction of King Solomon's Temple. The Masonic journey involves three degrees: Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason. The organization requires its members to believe in a Supreme Being and an afterlife, though it does not dictate specific interpretations.

The Grand Lodge of Texas supports various charitable initiatives, including educational programs for children, aid for the elderly, and scholarships. It is also affiliated with hospitals and institutions that benefit children, such as the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.

Impact and Legacy

Today, the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas continues to be a strong and influential organization, with a substantial membership base. Despite fluctuations in numbers over time, it remains committed to the principles of Freemasonry, fostering a community of men who strive for moral and intellectual enlightenment. The organization has contributed significantly to Texas's social fabric through its charitable and educational endeavors.
