Will backyard chickens save you money on egg prices? 🐔💰 With egg prices fluctuating, raising your own hens might seem like a smart financial move—but is it? “If you’re trying to defray the cost of eggs short-term, it may not be the best option,” said OSU Extension livestock specialist Dana Zook. “Egg prices will go down—we just have to get through this tough period.” Considering costs like feed, bedding and labor, eggs would need to stay at $10 per dozen for the next three years for a backyard producer to recoup expenses, based on an 8-hen flock. Still, backyard chickens remain popular, especially in times of uncertainty, and provide a great hobby for people of all ages.
