This center does critical work to keep families safe, but it has targeted been targeted it in the latest wave of federal cuts. Pulling resources from injury prevention programs could have devastating consequences, including for infant sleep safety, consumer product regulations (CPSC), overdose prevention, suicide prevention, and public health initiatives. The coalition is fighting to protect this work and ensure that vital research, prevention programs, and data systems continue serving communities. Their efforts go beyond just fighting budget cuts—they also support research and partnerships that help prevent injuries and save lives. During today’s Senate HELP Committee hearing on the HHS budget, two senators questioned Secretary RFK Jr. about the Safe to Sleep campaign. Senator Blunt Rochester confirmed that he had shut it down, while the Senator Alsobrooks pressed him on where the program was housed within HHS. RFK Jr. repeatedly misidentified its placement, interrupted with the false claim that no research scientists were fired, and unknowingly revealed he had no understanding of the program he eliminated—since he seemed to believe scientists managed it, when in reality, it was one of the Office of Communications teams he dismantled. He’s cutting crucial programs without even knowing what they do, and this is who our president wants to oversee other programs, such as consumer product, safety, and the CDC center for injury prevention.
