Bonaparte’s Gulls are back! This handsome, dainty gull can be identified at a distance by its buoyant flight and white leading wing edges. Black on the head varies from an ear spot to a hood, depending on age and season. Unique among gulls for building a stick nest in a tree in the boreal forest. While passing through our region they flock to beaches, bays, coves, and lakes. At The Ridges they’re a regular sight on Baileys Harbor and flying over the sanctuary. Photos by Owen Deutsch. (fb)
