On this day in history: New York officials attacked & captured Ethan Allen's cousin Remember Baker at his Arlington home in 1772. Both Ethan Allen and Remember Baker were wanted by New York officials for fighting against New York evictions of farmers who purchased their land titles from New Hampshire instead of from New York. Baker and Allen were leaders of the Green Mountain Boys militia that formed to fight against New York power in the New Hampshire Grants (now known as Vermont). Remember Baker was rescued by the Green Mountain Boys in 1772, but died only three years, one of the earliest casualties of the Revolutionary War. #RevolutionaryWar #America250 #VermontHistory #History Image description & credit: Historical marker erected by Vermont Society Sons of the American Revolution in Isle La Motte, VT. Inscription says, ""Captain Remember Baker Vermont Pioneer and a leader of the Green Mountain Boys was killed near this spot by Indians while on a scouting expedition, in August, 1775. He was the first American killed in Canada in the War of the American Revolution 'His death made more noise in the country than the loss of a thousand men towards the end of the American War.' — Ira Allen" Photo by Tim Dusablon, HMdb.org (2024) (fb)
