International Center for the Preservation of Wild Animals, Inc.

Overview

The International Center for the Preservation of Wild Animals, Inc., also known as The Wilds, is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to wildlife conservation and education. Established to address the need for innovative conservation efforts, it serves as a model for reclamation and restoration of natural habitats.

History

The organization has its roots in the visionary efforts of community leaders, including the former Columbus Zoo director, Jungle Jack Hanna, in the 1970s. This foresight, combined with the generous donation of land by the Ohio Coal Company, laid the groundwork for what would become The Wilds. Formally incorporated in 1984, The Wilds officially opened to the public in 1994, providing unique wildlife viewing opportunities on nearly 10,000 acres of reclaimed land in southeast Ohio's Muskingum County.

Conservation Work

The Wilds is recognized for its pioneering work in restoring ecosystems and providing high-quality care for rare and endangered wildlife species. The organization's conservation efforts include breeding programs, habitat conservation, and reintroduction initiatives. One of its notable achievements includes being involved in the reintroduction of a species once extinct in the wild. Additionally, The Wilds supports over 70 conservation projects annually, focusing on animal health, conservation, and habitat ecology.

Education and Engagement

As a leading conservation center, The Wilds offers a range of educational programs, summer camps, and community engagement activities. The facility attracts nearly 120,000 visitors annually, providing immersive experiences such as open-range tours and special events. The organization fosters a community dedicated to wildlife preservation, empowering people through education and direct involvement.

Awards and Recognition

In 2019, The Wilds received the Volunteer Engagement Award from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) for its innovative Outstanding Wilds Learning (OWLs) program, which promotes diversity and inclusion among teens. This recognition highlights the organization's commitment to community involvement and educational excellence.

Mission

The mission of the International Center for the Preservation of Wild Animals, Inc. is to empower people and save wildlife. This mission is achieved through conservation, education, and community engagement initiatives, positioning The Wilds as a model for effective wildlife conservation in North America.
