Meet a our idea of "walking sunshine"--Marilou Smith! Marilou has been with our organization for 15 years & we are so incredibly grateful for her, her dedication to helping others, & the way she is always so kind to everyone🫶 Take a minute to get to know Marilou a bit more: ☀️Her computer teacher in middle school gave her the nickname "Mimi" because he didn't know how to pronounce her name 😂 ☀️Grew up in Mount Airy, NC & says it's just like the show--she loved growing up there! ☀️Her hobbies include going to the gym, going to church, and drinking coffee ☀️She is passionate about raising awareness about Dementia and serving those who are faced with it. Unfortunately, Marilou has lost many family members due to Dementia. ☀️Interesting fact that many of us may not know: Marilou loves coffee...and we mean LOVES it. She shared, "I have a master list of all the coffee shops in Wilmington. Every other weekend I am trying a different shop. I try hot and then cold coffee to see which I like the best." (Who needs this master list of awesome coffee shops in the Wilmington area?!🙋♀️) ☀️Marilou absolutely loves what she does for work. When asked what she loves most about it, she shares that helping people get their medications for free providing hope to others is what brings her joy! ☀️If Marilou were to share a piece of advice to grade school kids, she'd share the following: "That life is not a race. Slow down and be in the moment of everything because one day you will look up and you’re over the hill. Life is a journey be in the moment and learn all that you can. " ☀️To Marilou, the key to having success in your profession is having compassion, love, empathy & joy. ☀️Her favorite childhood memory is going to church with her Grandma. Her Grandma would give her a good PINCH if she ever fell asleep! Marilou, you are special to all know meet you. Don't ever change! We appreciate who you are and all that you do for our organization. #BSRI #AgingResources #StaffHighlight #YouAreAwesome (fb)

🌟Celebrating Willie B "Ms. B" Flythe: A Pillar of the Southport Senior Community🌟 "In the heart of Southport, NC, there exists a woman whose warmth, wisdom, and kindness have left an indelible mark on everyone she meets. Willie B "Ms. B" Flythe is not just a valued member of the Southport Senior Center—she is a shining example of strength, devotion, and community spirit. Born in Henderson, NC, Ms. B made Southport her home in 1976. After graduating from UNC-W, she dedicated her career to serving as a school nurse in the Brunswick County Schools system, touching the lives of countless students and families with her care and expertise. Beyond her professional contributions, Ms. B built a beautiful life alongside her husband, William, raising two sons who, in turn, blessed her with two grandsons. Even in retirement, Ms. B continues to embrace life with enthusiasm. She spends her free time gardening and prioritizing her health, embodying the values she has long championed. But one of her greatest joys comes from being an active member of the Southport Senior Center, where she cherishes the friendships, the engaging activities, and the welcoming atmosphere fostered by a courteous and friendly staff. Ms. B’s wisdom extends beyond her experiences—she graciously shares it with those around her. Her guiding principles are simple yet profound: 1. Have and keep your faith strong. 2. Stick with your family. 3. Accept your friends as they are. Her presence is a gift to the community, a reminder of the beauty of genuine connection and unwavering positivity. The Southport Senior Center is honored to have her, and we are endlessly grateful for her wisdom and warmth. Ms. B, we love and appreciate you—thank you for being a vital part of our Southport Senior Community!" -John LaTour The Brunswick Center at Southport Activities Coordinator #CCAL #MeetMsB #ParticipantHighlight #SouthportNC #BrunswickCountyNC (fb)
