Agricultural Missions, Inc. (AMI)
Overview
Agricultural Missions, Inc. (AMI) is a US-based nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting rural communities worldwide. Established with a mission to address the structural causes of poverty and injustice in rural areas, AMI has been active for over 85 years[3]. The organization aligns its work with a strong focus on social and racial justice, environmental sustainability, economic viability, gender equity, and spiritual values[1].
Mission
The mission of Agricultural Missions, Inc. is to collaborate with people of faith and conscience globally to end poverty and injustice affecting rural communities[1]. AMI achieves this by partnering with local organizations rather than deploying its own personnel on the ground. This approach emphasizes building the capacity and supporting networks of rural community organizations in developing countries to address issues such as injustice, impoverishment, and quality of life improvements[1].
Program Areas
AMI's work is structured around several key program areas:
- Consciousness-Raising, Witness, and Advocacy for Future Direction in Rural Mission: This involves educating and raising awareness about issues affecting rural communities.
- The Rural Network Program: Focuses on supporting and connecting rural community organizations.
- The Rural Sustainability Program: Includes components such as Gender and Development, Earth Culture and Spirituality, Appropriate Technology, Social and Racial Justice, and Rural Legal Assistance and Training. These facets work together to promote sustainable development and social equity in rural settings[1].
Recent Initiatives
AMI has been involved in responding to global health challenges, such as planning COVID-19 education and awareness programs in collaboration with country partners[2]. This initiative reflects AMI's commitment to addressing pressing issues impacting rural communities.
Vision
AMI envisions a sustainable society grounded in social and racial justice, inclusive participation of indigenous and rural peoples, environmental stewardship, economic viability, gender equity, and spiritual values[1]. This vision guides the organization's efforts to empower local communities and advocate for their needs.

COVID19 COVID19 Impacts on AMI Programs THE CORONA VIRUS IN AFRICA As the Corona Virus COVID19 wreaks havoc on the countries of Europe and North America many of us have been asking and wondering about the countries of Africa. It is not usual for contagious diseases spread to lag in Africa when compared to other countries but rather Africa is often perceived as the place where many of the diseases originate and spread to the rest of the world. Most recent in 20142017 there was the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak EVD in Guinea Liberia and Sierra Leone and its current resurgence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo DRC. Since the start of this Pandemic in late 2019 the 50 countries of subSaharan have been largely spared and was not detected in this part of the continent until the end of February 2020.
