CHARITY, UNITY AND FRATERNITY

Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus (K of C) is a global Catholic fraternal service order founded in 1882 by Blessed Michael J. McGivney at St. Mary's Parish in New Haven, Connecticut. The organization was initially established as a mutual benefit society for working-class and immigrant Catholics in the United States.

History

The Knights of Columbus was established on March 29, 1882, as a response to the social and economic challenges faced by Catholic immigrants in the late 19th century. McGivney, an American Catholic priest, recognized the need for an alternative to the secret societies that many Catholics were barred from joining due to religious and ethnic discrimination. He sought to create a society that would provide insurance and support to families while promoting Catholic values and American patriotism.

The name "Knights of Columbus" was chosen to reflect the ritualistic nature of the organization and to honor Christopher Columbus, a Catholic figure celebrated as the discoverer of America. This choice was also intended as a symbolic bridge between the predominantly Irish-Catholic founders and other Catholic immigrants in the United States.

Principles and Activities

The Knights of Columbus is dedicated to the principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. Membership is restricted to male practicing Catholics aged 18 and above. The organization supports various charitable efforts, including refugee relief, Catholic education, local parishes, and global Catholic social causes.

The Knights operate a significant insurance program, with their wholly owned insurance company underwriting life insurance contracts. Additionally, they manage investment funds aligned with Catholic social teachings. The organization is known for its philanthropic activities, such as fundraising for the intellectually and physically disabled, and supporting Catholic educational and religious institutions.

Structure and Expansion

The Knights of Columbus has expanded globally, with more than 17,000 local councils worldwide. The organization includes various levels of governance, allowing for coordinated activities at local, national, and international levels.

Public Policy and Advocacy

The Knights have been involved in public policy advocacy, particularly on issues aligned with Catholic doctrine. They have supported various campaigns related to family and life issues, such as marriage and pro-life causes.

Honors and Recognition

The Knights of Columbus has been recognized for its contributions by various Catholic leaders, including papal acknowledgments. The organization's highest honor is the Gaudium et Spes Award, previously awarded to notable figures like Jean Vanier for his work with individuals with developmental disabilities.

Membership and Growth

As of 2024, the Knights of Columbus reported having over 2.1 million members worldwide. The organization also allows women to participate through auxiliary groups like the Columbiettes, while boys can join the Columbian Squires.

The Knights of Columbus continues to play a significant role in Catholic philanthropy and advocacy, influencing both local and global Catholic communities through its charitable and fraternal activities.
