Instruments of the Baroque Period: Lute The lute is a plucked stringed instrument that gained popularity in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries. The lute that was prominent in the Renaissance and Baroque periods likely evolved from the Arab ʿūd. This instrument was first taken to Europe in the 13th century by way of Spain. Similar to the ʿūd, the lute has a deep, pear-shaped body, a neck with a bent-back pegbox, and strings hitched to a tension, or guitar-type, bridge glued to the instrument’s belly. Lutes have a large, circular sound hole cut into the belly that are usually ornamented with a perforated rose. The lute produces a relatively quiet sound and the player of a lute is called a lutenist, lutanist or lutist.
