National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin, Inc.
The National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin, Inc. (NKFW) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by kidney disease in Wisconsin. Founded in 1968 by patients, family members, and medical professionals, the organization has been committed to providing support and resources to those impacted by chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Mission and Vision
The NKFW's mission focuses on preventing kidney and urinary tract diseases, enhancing the health of those at risk, and increasing organ donation awareness. Its vision is to be the leading public health resource on kidney health in Wisconsin, aiming to reduce the impact of CKD on vulnerable populations.
Strategic Goals
- Identification and Impact: The NKFW aims to identify individuals at risk for chronic kidney disease and improve their health outcomes.
- Health Advocacy: The organization seeks to enhance medical, self-management, and health advocacy behaviors among individuals with CKD.
- Public Health Initiatives: It engages in initiatives supporting kidney health, organ donation, and early transplantation, elevating kidney disease as a public health concern.
- Fundraising: NKFW works to secure sufficient funds to support its activities and ensure organizational growth.
Activities
The organization provides educational programs, supports research, and advocates for policies that promote kidney health. It also organizes community events and screenings to raise awareness about kidney disease and its prevention.
Funding and Support
NKFW relies on donations and community support to fund its programs, which include education, research, and advocacy efforts. A significant portion of its revenue comes from individuals and groups committed to its mission, with a focus on maximizing the use of funds for direct program services.
Governance and Structure
As an affiliate of the National Kidney Foundation, NKFW operates within a broader network of kidney health organizations across the United States. While it shares a mission with the national organization, NKFW is independently incorporated and managed, reflecting local needs and priorities.
Impact and Legacy
Since its inception, NKFW has been instrumental in improving kidney health care in Wisconsin through educational programs, public awareness campaigns, and support services for individuals and families affected by kidney diseases. Its efforts have contributed to increased awareness and advocacy for kidney health issues at both local and national levels.

Happy World Bike Day!!! In honor of the occasion, we want to give a big shout out to one of our favorite cyclists - living donor and NKFW CEO - Mike Crowley! Mike has already been back on his bike after donating his left kidney over the winter. Where do you think he should ride next? (fb)

"Organ Donation: Where Heroes Are Made" My poster relates to this prompt because it encourages people to do more research and consider kidney donation. Donating is such an amazing thing to be a part of, and my poster shows a couple facts about donation. I chose the color scheme to match the donor stickers on an id, and to match the kidney association's logo. Becoming a donor can help so many people in different ways. Whether it is the person needing a transplant, their family, or the donater's family, kidney donation leaves a positive, and lasting impact. So many people are in need of a transplant and the lucky ones who do get them, are able to live a much healthier, and fulfilling life. I hope that my poster encourages at least one person to look into becoming a donor because my artwork could be the reason lives are saved. WI high school artists responded to the prompt "In gratitude for saving a life through the selfless act of organ donation.” See all of the designs and vote for your favorites in the "People's Choice" category at https://www.kidneywi.org/postercontest/ (fb)
